Julia Rüther’s paintings start with (...) lovingly made objects. Her eye penetrates them, explores them and makes them visible in detail. The artist often finds her motifs with her camera’s view-finder. Rolls of cloth, stucco, carpets: she focuses on decorative things down to the smallest detail and takes that as the occasion for her paintings. Her paintings are not narrative, but rather gestural, they don’t present a story, plot, or situation, but neither are they abstract.
